Explaining Power-to-X (PtX)

What is Power-to-X?

At European Energy, we work closely with technology that converts renewable electricity from solar or wind farms into other forms of energy such as green hydrogen. This is known as Power-to-X (PtX).

PtX provides an incredible resource for the ongoing green transition of our global economy e.g. in the form of green hydrogen and/or methanol, both of which can be used as a substitute for fossil-based fuels.

Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen is made using renewable electricity from our solar and wind farms and water. It can empower your business to meet current and future environmental regulations, with the ultimate result of significantly reducing your company’s carbon emissions.

E-Methanol

We offer e-methanol (produced from green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂) that can play a key role in the seamless transition to decarbonisation within a number of sectors including transportation, heavy industry and plastics.

Now in production

The world’s first large-scale e-methanol facility

In 2025, European Energy commissioned the first large-scale e-methanol facility and the largest Power-to-X plant in the world. With locally sourced renewable electricity and biogenic CO₂, the plant supplies less carbon-intensive fuel and raw material to the shipping and plastics industries.

Our green hydrogen plant in the UK

Selms Muir Green Hydrogen

Approximately 14 miles southwest of Edinburgh, European Energy is developing a green hydrogen facility with 20 MW electrolysis capacity. The plant is expected operational in 2028 together with a co-located solar park, and will supply green hydrogen to British industry. The project is developed in partnership with Hygen, a UK hydrogen developer.
